A water bottle sling also works great as a place to hang an extra shirt or light jacket (or in a pinch, 2 items), further reducing the need for a daypack. Combined with a hip pack for snacks and other small items, this largely supplants daypacks on shorter excursions. (If you don’t mind the dorky look, spinning the hip pack to be in the front makes for a readily-accessible camera/phone pocket, much more comfy than a phone in the pocket of pants)

I like the Retro idea but please make sure the links work and, when they do that the item is still available. Thanks!

Sorry, we usually do check, but I was in charge this week so that didn’t happen. 😅

I live simply, off-grid in Canada’s boreal forest. If you do go on a trail hike, please be mindful of the inhabitants who’s home you are visiting :)

@Mark, had you been wearing similar shoes before the TLSAs? One concern with barefoot/minimal shoes is that you can end up in serious pain if you switch from cushy shoes without a deliberate transition process. Also, I hate to admit it but I’m a heel-striker—when I wear minimal shoes and hit the pavement for a day, I definitely feel it later. I’m interested in trying these but don’t want to go through the same pain again!

Not really, this was the first time I wore ultramarathon shoes. It’s been several years since I’ve written this post and I switched between shoes and have had no problems.

I prefer a walking staff to poles because it’s longer and can be used two-handed as needed for steep descents. Mine is carbon fiber and it also breaks down for easy packing.

Staffs — used by wizards! :-)

The hottest shoe in the gym community right now is RAD. I don’t work for them nor am I a paid representative. They started popping up at my very astute crossfit gym, where most of the members are 40 years younger than I am. I finally tried a pair and I can say they are the best shoes I’ve ever worn for running or exercise. I have always had a problem with Nike and other major brands coming untied in the middle of a workout. Something so simple to fix. I never could understand why this wasn’t solved. I have a very average foot so I’m not sure how they work for special circumstances. Check them out.
