Regarding book shelves. I just finished organizing 10 shelves, each about 12 feet long for my own book project. The Post article is right about subject matter, although I've been a bit lazy about alphabetizing. My best help: a Brother label maker, two or three on each shelf, telling me general topics.
decades ago, I visited an old Greenwich Village artist friend, and his wife who was also an artist, organized their books by size, and each shelf started with the smallest books on the left side and they went up and down in waves. They were useless in terms of finding anything but they looked terrific.
I am thinking about pocket sketch books now. I draw as a morning break when working from home. But I don’t tend to touch the pencil on days I work at the office. The home setup for drawing is a bit more elaborate than I would take on the road though. I bought some paper the other day and noticed artists diaries, wondering what they are for. Now I’m thinking I could grab a pocket sketch book and a pencil for my bag and do a bit of drawing every day. The main thing with drawing, and I still think of myself as a beginner, is to keep at it without worrying about whether it’s good. As my instructor said, there are hundreds of sketches in each renowned artist’s notes, showing that they had to work to get to their final pieces.
Hi Lorna, I bought my inner critic a gold plated hair pin with a squirrel on it. I had a dream a few months back where this adorable Squirrel handed me a gold hair pin to "pin my thoughts back" — which seemed really silly in the dream, but is really sage advice! Sometimes I do need to pin my thoughts back.
Hi Claudia, thanks so much for your kind reply. Wow, the story of your dream sound amazing. Think I need to take notice of any hint or clue around me, so to find to perfect gift for my inner critic! :-)
