retromendo! nice! i also will say that being on substack really opens the conversation up a lot. Its nice to be able to post comments and have direct feedback with the team.

Thanks for weighing in. I really like hearing from readers. This issue is an experiment and we are going to closely pay attention to what people think of it.

im also going to convert the packing list into a webpage so people could access it on the fly. i just built out a page with all of the default things and a fillable right side. and there is a button to download once you are done. You are not able to add and remove things but you can edit any entries on the page and also rename the title of the page. https://retire.army/packing

i think will work best with desktop, havent tested on mobile

Big fan of having a checklist for travel. I’ve made sure to add “take out the trash” to mine because, well, one time I forgot. Upon return, I was quick to pinch my nose.

Hey, thanks for the Travel Tips in the Retro Recomendo, I loved all of them!

I wasn't able to edit Mark's travel packing PDF, so I just printed it out and will use it to revise my own travel packing list.

And I'll for sure keep Claudia's tip in mind when traveling and looking for a local restaurant.

You've got my vote to continue the retro tips!

Warm regards to all of you.

My family is headed to Chicago for vacation this week, and definitely having fun exploring #ChicagoFood on Instagram already. Thanks, Claudia!

One share for Kevin today: My grandparents were born Amish (converted to Mennonite by the time I came along) and I grew up knowing my grandpa always cut his own hair. After many disappointing haircuts and never really enjoying the experience of strangers cutting my hair, I decided to follow in his footsteps many years ago. I’ve tried all kinds of gadgets. The “Flowbee” is one of the most fun. To this day I use a Norelco Do-It Yourself Hair Clipper. But, my absolute favorite device is the “neck hair guide” for an even hairline on the back of your neck. So satisfying every time I use it. Simple and delightful tool. I thought you might enjoy it 😀 https://a.co/d/fdigQvD

Please recommend the Donegan DA-5 OptiVisor Headband Magnifier, 2.5x Magnification, 8" Focal Length. I love mine and use it all the time for doing my nails, fine sewing, detailed cleaning, detailed fine artwork, and looking at insects. It's fun. An attachable loupe is available, which I have, and don't use. I love my handheld loupes. Thank you for Recomendo!

The process to sign in to make a comment is rather onerous and fraught with pitfalls. (I don't actually have a Substack, it was inadvertently created in the process of trying to leave this comment.)

I am certain you are missing an opportunity to publish a book with this 'Retro Recommendo' concept. Aren't all the postings for Recommendo available somewhere? I personally now feel I'm being shorted 6 recommendations a month for other people to 'catch up.' Write them a book instead. Sell it or give it away, whatever seems like it will lead to more revenue. But I honestly feel the gruel is being thinned out a bit here, which is why I'm always hesitant to actually subscribe to anyone's newsletter. Just my 2 cents, of course.

Here's a suggestion: When you do Retro Recommendo, only run ads that were in the issues that originally appeared when the suggestions appeared. That way, you're consistent with the concept stem to stern. Your advertisers are advertising in good faith that you are going to be providing fresh product to attract an audience. I feel you're short-changing them a bit with reruns. Maybe ads on Retro could be half price or something.
